  2. **Sorry I can't write in Bangla in my unix machine.

    Mehedi,

You may not be aware but cadets are doing extremely well in army and in other area in society. You only know the names you mentioned. But there are numerous good students, scientists, doctors, engineers, administrators, etc who are very well established in their field. Please visit the Wiki pages of Faujdarhat, Mirzapur, and look at some of their notable alumni - their cadets are old enough to get themselves established in society - I know many important people that could also be listed there. Remember that only 1/1000 students (who are less than 45 years of age) in Bangladesh have attended a cadet college. 30% of those students are in the army. But when you look around yourself in universities, it certainly looks like I see a cadet in every 100 or may be in every 30 or even less. Virtually all the cadets who do not go in the army study at a university. You cannot say that for any other institution. In the current administration among the advisers, besides Fahim Munayem, there are two cadets - Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman (Faujdarhat) and Dr Mohammad Tamim (Mirzapur). That's a way bigger ratio than 1/1000. Gen Moeen is also a cadet (1965-1971), but from Pakistan - in Sargodah.

Most important thing that you should remember is that 80-85% of cadets are 45 or younger. Because, only since the mid 80s there have been 10 cadet college batches coming out. You cannot judge success in society by looking for just popular persons when most cadets are so young. Let them all grow upto 60 or 70 and you will notice many important persons who will have a cadet college education. People from the early four cc have reached maturity - some in their fifties and some in sixties, and the names you mention are also from those colleges.

You also mention about educating elite class. That is true for British Public Schools where you have to pay huge fees. But cadet colleges are different in that respect that we get on the basis of merit and not our social status - most cadets are from middle class background - as I can say for my batch. But when someone comes out of a cadet college, he/she is certainly belongs to the elites and among the brightest students of the country. For many students who come from low middle class or middle class especially outside Dhaka, cadet colleges give them a second opportunity at life - literally.

The total number of cadets are very low. So do not compare cadets with all the rest of the country. But rather keep in mind the ratio 1/1000 of total students in mind. Most cadets are doing well whatever they are doing, and they also contribute significantly to our nation even if you consider the fact that we were fed, clothed, lodged (and thus 10 times money spent on us than a student at other government school) by the government's military budget.

I can write many things now. But I will only say that please do not be let down by your perception that cadets are not doing well. They are doing very well. But certainly we all can strive to do better.

    • Muhammad,

Your writings are really good especially your science fiction and the one on 'atiur rahman'.

I agree with a lot of your points in your comments here. But your perceptions about 'gunijans' and 'famous' - I have things to say about that - please think about it. You have to remember that only about '1 in 1000' students are cadets. And also 85% cadets are under 45 years. So, even if 1% of 'gunijans' in Bangladesh came out of cadet college, that's very good. But I think it's more than that - somewhere around 2% - 5% and growing. No cadets from BCC, CCR, PCC, MGCC, SCC, CCC have yet reached 45. Do you think there's no gunijans there? 🙁 Many among them will be considered 'gunijans' in their fifties and sixties when people's accomplishments are usually known.

Also, 'gunijans' and being 'famous' are not the same. Intellectuals are 'gunijans' and very important people for society, but they rarely become famous. If I ask you to name a living Bangladeshi scientist, you may name Muhammad Zafar Iqbal. But, you are wrong - I can name 40 Bangladeshi scientists in Bangladesh and abroad, who made more important contributions to science than him, and therefore more important scientists. Has Zafar Iqbal published a good research paper in last 15 years? - I don't think so. Scientists are rated by their original research and discovery. Zafar Iqbal writes popular science fiction and columns - and thus he can be a professor famous for a different popular reason. On the other hand, very few people know - Dr. Harun Ar Rashid (#1 physicist in Bangladesh, Dhaka U), Dr. Zahid Hasan (physicist, Princeton), Dr. Maqsudul Alam (Top researcher in Molecular Biology, USA), Abed Chowdhury (Zenetics, Australia), (they may not be cadets) and many like them who are far more important scientists. Scientists rarely get known outside their field unless they get a Nobel Prize or something. So a very accomplished intellectual may not be 'famous'. And a less accomplished scientist may be famous for a popular reason.

Many cadets do well in intellectual area, and become important professors, researchers, engineers, doctors although they may not be 'famous' with that popular appeal. At this point I should also say that I did not know about 'Atiur Rahman' until I read your blog, but knew of 'Debapriya Bhattacharya' and many other economists who usually crave popular attention. But surely 'Atiur Rahman' is an exemplary 'gunijan', although a bit little less famous - but that does not matter.

My point is, cadets are supposed to do well in intellectual atmosphere - and they do, they become important persons. If a cadet wants to be famous/celebrity as a player or actor, he can - but may be with less success than others. Now in our culture, usually writers, lawyers, politicians, journalists get a lot of name recognition and popular attention and considered famous/celebrity. And if you tell me there are not that many cadets in that profession being famous- I would agree. As you point out, to be famous that way, you do not have to have stellar academic results, but have to have some good creative idea - it does not matter whether you got an excellent cadet college education or not. But I would also say that certainly cadets are doing better than the ratio '1 in 1000' - there are many cadets in those professions too - but they are a still lot younger. Whatever field/job someone is working on - being an important person in that is the most important task whether you cater to popular appeal or not. You can be a super creative programmer - you are a very important 'gunijan' - you don't have to be famous catering to the masses, and writing about your own accomplishments.

I would also add that there are not that many published writers among ex-cadets? I think it's because we are so few in numbers.

You should wait at least 10/20 years until a good number of cadets are in their 50s before evaluating accomplishments of ex-cadets and also keeping in mind their ratio among the educated population.

      * Sorry that I write these long comments in English.

  7. there are many spelling mistakes and incomplete sentences here as I wrote it in just few minutes. Hope some people reads this. Main point is that most cadets are still very young (less than 45) and small in number to be noticed in our society at large. Only several hundred cadets are over 55 - I can name many accomplished 'gunijan' people among them. You cannot say that they have not achieved distinction - either professionally or intellectually.

  8. salary can't be a parameter to judge a cadet.

of 48 cadets of our intake only 6 are in army.

but among rest of the 42 we are 34 student in buet, dmc, du, dhaka dental and IUT......i mean studying in dhaka metropolitan city....rest 8 are in mymensingh medical and ruet....i can bet no such institution ( cadet colleges excluded ) can claim such a high ratio of students studying in renowned institutes........i'll say this waz the "expectation" to cadets.........Not only us every batch has holds such results.......so i think what we expected iz what we observing.

and about salary.........buetianz often kick the job at mobile company although that's a highly paid job....seniors of me told me they weren't in any department there that attract them....instead with a salary of 20k in a software firm's development section attract them much.

this waz my point.....salary doesn't matter.......all that matter iz social and mental status.
