  4. Madam Sabina, another wonderfully written snippet of a fledgling romance. And it gets better each time. In this one, I see a wonderful bouquet of very interesting motifs. The main three I see are, Abhijit’s interest in amateur radio, Rabya and Abhijit eating panipuri, and Abhijit’s house on Rubicon. Let me try to explain and thread these pearls together.

Abhijit is dabbling in the archaic hobby of Amateur radio that very few people in the world are interested in and even lesser percentage of the populous cares about. It is a bunch of lonely people, hunched over their radios, trying to make a contact with another lonely person half way across the world. I see a tremendous parallel with Abhijit’s real life, his loneliness stark and bare, while his heart calls CQ CQ CQ. All he gets back is silence and static. He hears other people talking to each other on airwaves, and he sees other people in love in real life. But there is no one for Abhijit. As God turns his knob of life, his heart screams CQ (Seek You) and time bleeds away in a drip, helpless, hapless and weak Abhijit thinks about how his mother fed him with her own hands. He is still a mama’s boy!

On the other hand, confident Rabya is sitting by herself and eating panipuri. No one is feeding her, mind you! She is an independent woman. As Abhijit gets drawn to Rabya like a moth that flies into fire, and Rabya and Abhijit’s eye’s locked, was it love at first sight? Or Rabya is telling Abhijit that she could have men like him for brunch? Abhijit could meet the same fate like the little brittle panipuri that she was popping in her mouth whole! Stay away Abhijit! Stay Away! This indeed could be the “jujuburi” that your mother warned you about!

Madam Sabina, last but significantly important is Abhijit’s abode on Rubicon. In the English language, the idiom, “Crossing The Rubicon” means a point of no return. You see madam, in circa 49 BC, a triumphant Julius Caesar, broke the mighty Roman law, crossed the Rubicon and made his way to Rome. The rest they say, is history. Even Julius Caesar, while crossing the Rubicon, said to have said, “The die is cast.” I can see a very triumphant and victorious, stiletto heel wearing Rabya marching across Abhijit’s Rubicon and taking over his heart, his body, his soul and his life. Alea iacta est. The die has been cast!

There you have it Madam Sabina. I applaud your writing. I love the subliminal messages. Most importantly, I enjoy the references hidden in these little stories. As you build up these characters, I wonder when will the lion in Abhijit stand out? It is said that lion’s have a big strong heart. Does his heart have the strength to withstand the gusts of Rabya. Or will it crash and burn within minutes like the Hindenburg as the world shrieks, “Oh the humanity!”

Again. A wonderful dissection of the blog Mr./Ms Pappu! Thoroughly enjoyed your write up.
Only a point of little disagreement I must say : Abhijit doesn't necessarily have to be a 'lion' (as the story builds up further) to prove his worth. To me, he doesn't have to be explicitly masculine to win Rabeya's heart or attention. He had been his mother's child all along -- likewise, he can be Rabeya's darling baby; and gracefully accept being dependent of Rabeya's independence.

From another angle, what if Rabeya's apparent 'confidence' is anything but the air of so-called confidence around her. Somehow, I feel, She will be discovered being equally (if not more) lonely as the story line unfolds.

      • Mr.Das, I do appreciate you reading my post and converting my monologue into a dialog. Maybe a few more will join with their words of wisdom and change it further into a discussion.

You see Mr. Das, the metaphor “lion” was brought into the discussion by the esteemed author herself in her previous post. As a matter of fact, Madam Sabina was responding to my comment. That was how I picked up that little nugget of information. But I am not replying to refute your “little point of disagreement”, I am nodding my head vigorously and thoroughly agreeing with your statement, “he doesn't have to be explicitly masculine to win Rabeya's heart or attention. He had been his mother's child all along -- likewise, he can be Rabeya's darling baby; and gracefully accept being dependent of Rabeya's independence.”

Mr. Das, almost all famous fictional and historical lovers in the world, from Casanova to Sartre to Lord Byron to our own Prithiviraj Chauhan, the man have been a MAN. He has an air of gravitas and swashbuckling hubris. Nothing else in the universe mattered, but the love of his woman. And he had the masculinity to go out there and get it. Ayn Rand in her book The FountainHead, talks about Howard Roark. Critics say that Ms. Rand was describing her perfect man. “I could die for you. But I couldn't, and wouldn't, live for you”, Says Roark, in The Fountainhead.

What you just described is the typical Bengali lover. He suffers from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhay’s Devdas Syndrome. That’s our perfect Bengali lover Mr. Das. Devdas. When sober, pining away in love for Paro and when drunk, staying with Chandramukhi. And finally dying on her doorstep on a dark cold night.

My analysis or mis-analysis is based on the information that Ms. Sabina is providing for us readers. Since I live in a binary world, I am going by that alone, and comparing that to the large sample data of the Bengali man (being a Bengali man myself). John F. Kennedy said, “There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” I just belong to the “why not” side of things Mr. Das. My response to Madam Sabina’s post was and still is, merely a subjective conjecture.
On the other hand, these characters are running around in our esteemed author’s head. Let’s wait and see what great characteristics Abhijit has, in spite of his flaws. After all, a diamond with a few flaws is far better than a pebble without any. Mr. Das, I happen to believe, even you will agree to that!

Thanks Mr. Pappu. Now I know that you are a MAN, a bengali man.
What I perceive from the writer's previous mention of Lion with regard to Abhijit's prospect in love is that Abhijit indeed has the potential of being (or becoming one rather?) a lion -- in the sense of courage or having a big [not necessarily a dilated or hypetrophied one; being unsure of Abhijit's age and current eating habits ( a mention of coke zero isn't sufficient one would say) one cannot rule out that possibility though] heart, but not in the sense of (obvious-masculine-granted for- aggression that would prefer devouring/dominating Rabeya's (probable) emotional/sentimental sparklings.

So you see, Abhijit can be and can't be a Lion. Of course, we will have to wait for the incoming episodes for the author is playing the God (or the Goddess maye be!) here.

As for the typicality of the male 'bengali' lovers, I would dare say there is no typical lover. Everybody is unique and every tale emerges from a distinct fountain which can't be patterned by one Fountainhead or one Debdas. And I believe, idolizing the 'famous' or 'historical' lovers has caused a huge burden on today's lovers in the sense than being triumphant has become more glorious than winning.

I somehow feel Abhijit might not want to be a Lion. He might just be a lonesome stag, grazing in the moonlit field -- eagerly waiting for his deer -- at times seeking for one with some desperation. The question is, whether this stance of his makes him a lesser Lion. Anybody might ask though, why not?

          • Mr. Das, like you, I am also not sure how old Abhijit is. But I am sure that when I am metaphorically referencing Abhijit as "lion hearted", it does not necessarily mean our hero of the story is suffering from hypertrophy of the heart. You see Mr. Das, my father died from cardiac hypertrophy at the age of 42 after suffering from high blood pressure from the age of fifteen. I would hardly call a person who is 42, “old”. We can put the definition of old on hold and wait and see if the age is ever revealed by our author. But then again, I have heard that the symptoms of a broken heart (again, a metaphor Mr. Das. Not literal) is very similar to a heart attack.

While I agree with you that no two lovers are the same, please understand that I am talking from a thematic or a motif standpoint. I am not talking about the minute details. Even the great Einstein once declared, “I want to know God’s thoughts - the rest are mere details.”

I did get a chuckle out of your statement when you say "Abhijit can be and can't be a Lion”. Being a very simple man myself, I did not quite follow the logic, but it reminded me of
Schrödinger's cat! It was a fun discussions none the less.

First I would like to thank you for reading my responses. Secondly, please accept my sincerest apologies for not responding in Bengali. I just wanted to take a moment and say that the "Broken Heart Syndrome" is actually a rather interesting medical fact and there has been a lot of discussions around this phenomenon, at least in the United States.

Who knew when I metaphorically addressed Abhijit’s big/lion heart, that our little virtual “adda" would lead to stress cardiomyopathy?

              • Mr. Das, I appreciate your kind big bengali words, with “kind” being the operative word. Even though I have been in this country for 25 years, back in Calcutta, english was my first language and my mother tongue, bengali, was my second. I believe I enjoyed your response in bengali much more than I would have in english. I felt the kindness and sincerity come through, even though it took me awhile to understand quite a few words. For that I thank you.

I do not think our discussion was argumentative at all. It was a debate of sorts. You see Mr. Das, I cannot simply read a beautiful prose or poetry, or see a beautiful picture or painting and not think. I think, therefore I am. Cogito ergo sum. I then turn into a critic. And thus, I become a very important person to the artist. I believe art cannot exist without it's critic. As a critic, I interpret things. Not in a destructive way of course. Rather, I look upon Art as a Goddess whose mystery is my province to intensify, and whose majesty is my privilege to make it even more marvelous in the eyes of men.

So we shall see, how these characters are developed by our esteemed author. This episode was the best yet. It was melancholy one hand and yet it was full of exciting symbolism on the other. And it all fit in like a jig-saw puzzle.

                He's a real nowhere man
                Sitting in a nowhere land
                Making all his nowhere plans
                For nobody

He's as blind as he can be
Just sees what he wants to see
Nowhere man, can you see me at all
                Nowhere man don't worry
                Take your time, don't hurry
Leave it all till somebody else
                Lends you a hand
