      Dear everyone,

This is Haidar. How are you doing? I know I was never been regular to communicate. But today, I'd like to share something. It might be strange. Well, I feel strange too.

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to my Lord to keep myself still safe and sound. I guess you already know about the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The magnitude level was 9.0 and it is the worst in last 140 years. One of the most devastating hit was in Miyagi prefecture. Well, I witnessed the tsunami because I was there.

I live in Sendai, the largest city in Miyagi. My office is in Tagajo, a costal city, about 20km north from Sendai. The Sendai-Shiogama Sea Port is very near to my office. I can see the port and ships very clearly from my office.

On 11th March, the earthquake hit after 2:30 p.m. We took shelter under our table. It was the longest earthquake I've ever experienced. In our office, the A.C., lightings and ventilator systems are set up at the ceiling within a large steel frame and covered with hardboard. After the shock, some places of the ceiling were cracked and lightings and some covers were displaced. I was on the 3rd floor. At that moment, we had no idea about the casualties or calamities around us. Later I heard (and also saw) that on our 4th floor a huge portion of ceiling was totally collapsed.

After the 1st shock we immediately left the building. And we were following the regular drill. At first we had a head count to ensure that everyone is safe. Then, the buildings would be checked if they are safe to enter. If safety is confirmed, we can enter and continue our work, otherwise we'll leave the office and go home.

There are 18 buildings in our company area. Obviously not everyone was in there respected area due to sample preparation or other experiments. So, it was taking a little bit to confirm everyone. In the meantime, we saw the local people are leaving their houses for shelter in higher area. Why? Coz, there is a tsunami alert. We were watching live broadcast on our mobile phones. At first, the alert was for 6m high tidal wave. The safety checking and head counting were going on simultaneously. Then we had the alert for 10m high wave. Our chief in charge for safety then postponed head counting and checking inside the building. He ordered everyone to take shelters in near most buildings and stay at least above 2nd floor. Within 20 to 25 minutes after that, the tsunami hit our area. So, the tsunami hit us within 1 hour after the quake.

Well, I saw the tsunami from 3rd floor. It was so devastating that it looked like a movie (2012 or some other based on natural calamity) just on a large 3D screen. The first thing came to my mind was ‘Laugh’. Although I was not laughing loudly rather I had a smile. It was not like ‘what an interesting view’ or ‘what a great show’. I had totally different feelings.

Allah, God, Jehovah, Ishwar or whatever we may call Him, we are so small, so tiny to our Lord. We are just nothing to Him. He can do anything at any time just like a snap. The cars, trucks from nearer parking areas and containers from ship were flooded like paper origami, and nothing could stop them. They were smashed to each other like plastic toys. In Tagajo, the tsunami was about 12m high from sea-level. Our office was 10m high. So, the rest of 2m tide flooded our entire company area and 1st floor was under water. The guard rail was collapsed in some area and a number of cars and a good amount of garbage and wood were flooded inside. Everything happened within around 2 minutes. A lot of cars were stopped by the rest of guard rail and trees in front our building and soon we saw a pile of smashed cars. I saw a few unfortunate people who were trying to escape by car, but could not make it. When their cars were stopped by the pile they came out and climbed the tree. And the worst case is, there was snowing already. Later they were rescued by some of our staffs when the tide stopped. I also heard that, some people got stuck inside their cars and could not come out. They were screaming for help but we had no support to help them. Later at mid-night the Japan self-defense force came in to rescue them.

You may have seen the huge fire in oil refineries. As far as I know, that happened in 2 places. One is in Chiba prefecture and another one is just 700 to 800 meters from our office. There is also a large oil refinery in Sendai port. I saw fire in 6 places. There might be others but I don’t know. The burning did not start simultaneously. They started one by one. At first there were 2 places and the burning started immediately after tsunami. After couple of hours, burning started in other places. The largest tanker was burned for the whole night.

At least we were safe in our shelter although we had no food, no water, no internet, phone connection was dead and power connection was cut. We only had the emergency lightings which lasted for couple of hours. I thought it would be completely dark at night. But, I was wrong. Thanks (??) to the burning of oil refinery. The whole sky was orange and we did not experience black-out.

Now, there was another dangerous point that I can realize only now. The water around us was almost black because of the gasoline leakage from smashed cars. I even saw floating gas cylinder (usually used for cooking) continuously leaking propane gas, entered the 1st floor of our building. May be at that environment, the probability of catching fire was quite low. But I guess, nobody would have surprised if it really happened. Anyway, the only connection to outside world was the TV broadcasting. And even sometimes Docomo and AU (cell phone providers in Japan) users could have sent e-mails, although phone connections were totally dead. But the Softbank cell phones were out of service for the whole time (damn Softbank! I had that!!).

Well, our time was passing very slowly (Theory of relativity! You know, Einstein did say that, “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity”). We were getting exhausted. I was trying to sleep on my chair putting my head on the table. But who could sleep with continuous after shock. It was getting so monotonous that I was ignoring small ones. But sometimes there were strong ones. So, I had to flee under the table. And even I tried to sleep sitting under my table. But there was problem too. The space was quite small for a fat man like meJ. At 4 a.m., I got the news that Nagano and Niigata prefectures were also hit by strong earthquake and costal area of Niigata prefecture was in tsunami threat too. This made me sad again. I was nostalgic. I spent 3 years of my college life in Niigata and I used to go for skiing near Nagano prefecture. “What the hell is going on here”, I murmured. Anyway I said to myself, “Subhanallah, all praise belong to my Lord who can do anything at any moment. He made the system and He can destroy it. I can seek only for His mercy and help.”

Japan self-defense force came to check our area at midnight. Around 6 a.m. they entered our place. At noon when the water was at knee level we got the green signal to leave our building. I’m telling just about our place. There were some areas where the water could not move and the height was still at chest level. I believe everyone one in our company is rescued by this time. But when we left, only those who live around the down-town of Sendai and other high-lands where tsunami did not hit were permitted to leave. I left for Sendai with a few of my colleagues at 12:15 p.m. We received some water and rations from rescue team.

On the way back home we saw the sign of huge destructions. For sure, all the machines and facilities in 1st floors in our company are completely out of order. Everything was full of mud. On the streets, there were piles of cars, broken house, wooden bar and beams, road block, uprooted trees and so on. Fortunately, the only missing thing was dead body. Or who knows, may be the rescue team removed them already. The whole area was totally destroyed. It was so unbelievable that I felt like I was in a movie set, nothing is real. But the fact is everything was brutally real. After walking around the destroyed area for about 1 hour, we reached the unaffected area. After walking for another hour, at last we got a taxi to come back to Sendai.

Although there was no tsunami in Sendai main city, the earthquake was stronger than Tagajo. So, obviously my house was a bit messy. But that was nothing comparing to what I saw. I rearranged some parts of my home, collected water and bought some food. And my greatest relief is, my wife and daughter were not here. They are in Bangladesh right now. Since I was in the missing list for more than 24 hours, my family and my friends were extremely worried for my safety. I’m really very grateful from the bottom of my heart for their kind concern.

I’m also grateful to my Lord for keeping me in completely safe condition. Now, at least I have electricity and water supply at my home. Although we don’t have gas supply yet and our food-stock is running out but still we are safe. A lot of people have lost everything. I know many of my colleagues have lost their properties and looking for their families. And most of all, our fighting is not over yet. At this moment, we have 2 big alerts. One is Fukushima atomic power plant. Japan government is trying every option to prevent the reactor from blasting out. And another one is, within next 3 days we have 70% possibility of having another earthquake of magnitude 7.0. Still we are having continuous after shocks.

Anyway, you may ask me, “What the hell I’m waiting for. Why I’m not trying to escape from Sendai?” Now, the poet is silent here! We are stuck here in Sendai. Every escape route is closed. Sendai sea-port and air-port is destroyed by tsunami. Highways and other transport roads to get out of Sendai is either collapsed or damaged badly or at least in danger. Moreover, there is no fuel-supply on the way. I mean, the gasoline stands are closed. Here once again, Japan government is providing their best support to save us.

So, please dear readers, please pray for us (not only for Bangladeshis, but for everyone here) for our safety. “O Lord! Please save us and give strength so that we can rise strong and follow your path”.

      With regards,

      Haidar
